The Pink City

Jaipur is the capital city of the state of Rajasthan, and has to be the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. The whole city is saturated with a rusty pink that, by law, covers over a majority of the buildings, palaces and monuments. When the Prince Albert and Queen Elizabeth II visited India in 1876, Jaipur adorned itself in pink, and neighboring cities of Jodphur in blue, and Udaipur in white. It looks as though someone has just photoshopped the hue of the entire city – it’s amazing.

There are street stalls outside of majestic palaces, camels and elephants stride casually through the streets and marketplaces dotted everywhere - the atmosphere and vibe is unlike anything else.

We first visited the grand Anouki Museum to enrich our knowledge on the practice of block printing we’re about to undertake extensively for the next few weeks. Then off to our hotel, Narain Niwas Palace, a giant complex that appears out of nowhere, standing in it’s majestic pastel glory. It felt like being in a Wes Anderson movie – long train rides across country and sunset hued hotels. From there we were rushed off to make it in time for our boat ride to an island palace. At this point I’m pretty sure I’m just dreaming.
