Old Delhi is incredibly hard to capture,
through words or images. It’s a labyrinth of winding alleys between building blocks
selling just about everything. In a tactful act of self-preservation, you need
to run from one side of the path to the other, avoiding everything from cows,
racing motorbikes, carts of gas bottles, and a million other people trying to
exactly the same. Absolute chaos.
We snaked our way firstly to the bead
store. Those Sydney bead stores have nothing on these huge Delhi bead
warehouses. Walls and shelves stacked everywhere with bags of beads whilst
sample jars in cabinets line the floor – you have no idea where to look first.
As soon as I’d pick up something, I was presented with 20 other variations.
Other stores stocked levels and levels of sequins, beads in glass, metal,
sequins, ceramic – there were colours I didn’t even know existed.
My favourite finds would be some
holographic sequins with these crazy cool iridescent qualities, some beige
leather sequins and some classically beautiful metallic seed beads.
